Robert Redford Speaks about
Share the Beat was first conceptualized by the James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness (JRI) in 2003. Since the first performance in Los Angeles, the event has traveled to Salt Lake City, Sundance, Omaha and Atlanta. Share the Beat uses the power of music and story telling to raise awareness and funds for the benefit of the transplant community.
The JRI is a non-profit organization formed in 1995 by James Redford two years after his liver transplant in 1993. The JRI's goal is to educate the public and to raise awareness about the need for organ and tissue donation through film, educational outreach and the web.
Since the first event in 2003, the JRI has partnered with various institutions, organ procurement organizations and related professional associations across the country. In 2009, the JRI will partner with the American Society of Transplantation (AST). The AST is an international organization of transplant professionals dedicated to advancing the field of transplantation through the promotion of research, education, advocacy, and organ donation to improve patient care. The AST is the largest transplant professional association representing over 2,900 physicians, surgeons, scientists and allied health professionals from all disciplines of transplantation throughout the world.
